Types of Rosacea

There are four recognized types of rosacea. Because at-home light devices operate at a significantly lower energy than in-clinic treatments, they are relevant primarily to reducing redness in types 1, 2, and 3. Type 4 is near the eyes — a zone that consumer devices are not designed for.

Can Light Actually Improve the Appearance of Rosacea?

The short answer is yes, with the right wavelengths. Light travels in waves, and “wavelength” refers to the length of the wave between two consecutive peaks. Human eyes perceive different wavelengths as different colors of light, though wavelengths extend far beyond what the eye can see. Different wavelengths penetrate to different depths of tissue and are absorbed by different targets, called chromophores, within the tissue.

In rosacea, the target is hemoglobin. The redness associated with rosacea comes from dilated or damaged blood vessels. Hemoglobin is the protein in red blood cells that gives them their color — and it's the chromophore that matters here. When hemoglobin absorbs light energy, that energy converts to heat, which causes the blood vessel wall to coagulate and the vessel to constrict, reducing the visible redness above it.

Simply put, when it comes to light-based devices, there are two factors at play:

1. The selected wavelength of a light-based device must be able to penetrate deep enough to reach blood vessels.

2. Not all wavelengths are absorbed by hemoglobin at the same rate.

Optimizing light to target rosacea comes down to which wavelengths can address both mechanisms simultaneously.

Which Wavelengths Penetrate the Deepest?

Not all wavelengths penetrate skin equally. Shorter wavelengths of light scatter heavily and get absorbed before reaching deeper. Longer wavelengths travel further into the skin before being absorbed. This matters for rosacea because blood vessels sit at different depths. Fine surface capillaries are close to the skin surface, while larger, more established vascular lesions sit further into the dermis.

A device that only emits short wavelengths cannot reach the deeper vessels. Yellow light is able to reach blood vessels closer to the surface of the skin, while red and near-infrared light can penetrate further down. However, penetration depth is only one half of the equation.

Which Wavelengths Does Hemoglobin Actually Absorb?

Hemoglobin absorbs light across a wide range of wavelengths, but not all equally. Lower wavelengths, 600nm and less in particular, are more readily absorbed by hemoglobin. However, since lower wavelengths do not penetrate deep enough to reach blood vessels, the shortest wavelengths are not relevant for rosacea. Yellow light at roughly 570–600nm hits the sweet spot. It penetrates deep enough to reach surface-level vessels and absorbs into hemoglobin far more efficiently than red or near-infrared light. This is why pulsed dye lasers emitting at 585–595nm (yellow) are the clinical gold standard for visible redness and broken capillaries.

Hemoglobin absorption drops off significantly for red light, but doesn’t disappear entirely. In the near-infrared range, absorption increases again, though it still has lower absorption than yellow light. Combined with greater penetration depth, near-infrared wavelengths can produce sufficient thermal effect to coagulate deeper vessels that yellow light can’t physically reach.

These are two distinct mechanisms working together: yellow light addresses surface redness via preferential hemoglobin absorption, while near-infrared light addresses deeper vascular structure via penetration depth.

Why At-Home Devices Usually Miss the Mark — and Why IPL Doesn’t

Lasers and LEDs inherently emit light at wavelengths that are targeted, meaning they emit only one color of light per diode. Because of this, laser and LED-based home devices are designed to emit red, blue, and near-infrared light that target the most common skin concerns such as wrinkles and acne. These are deliberate design choices for those applications, not limitations of the technology itself. The result is that most at-home lasers and LED masks produce little to no yellow light, which is precisely what rosacea redness responds to best.

IPL (intense pulsed light) works differently. It emits a broad "rainbow" spectrum, typically 500nm to 1200nm, in a single short burst. That short duration is why IPL can feel more intense than LED; light energy delivered rapidly is generally less comfortable than when delivered gradually. While this makes IPL less useful for some photorejuvenation applications, it's actually a good fit for rosacea redness because that broad spectrum naturally includes both yellow and near-infrared light.

IPL can be further optimized with filters that block unnecessary wavelengths and concentrate output where it matters most. Since red-range wavelengths aren't absorbed by hemoglobin as efficiently, filtering them out reduces the heat sensation and improves comfort. A well-filtered IPL device therefore addresses both mechanisms simultaneously: yellow output for surface hemoglobin absorption, and near-infrared output for deeper vessel penetration.

A Note on Expectations

At-home devices operate at lower fluences than the clinical devices used in the studies referenced here — professional machines typically use 10 J/cm² or above. That gap matters. At-home devices are underpowered by design, which is part of what makes them safer for unsupervised use. The tradeoff is that you compensate with more frequent sessions over a longer period. For many people, consistent at-home use over several months produces a noticeable improvement in the appearance of redness at a fraction of the cost of repeated clinic visits — and with considerably less discomfort per session.

Results will vary based on skin tone, vessel depth, and rosacea subtype. If your rosacea is severe or you have ocular rosacea, a dermatologist is the right starting point.

The Bottom Line

How Light Removes Hair

All laser, LED, and IPL hair removal works through a process called Selective Photothermolysis.

Light is absorbed by melanin (pigment) in your hair. When a device emits light, that light hits your hair and gets converted to heat. If the hair follicle gets hot enough for a long enough period of time, the hair producing cells are destroyed.

The challenge: Dark skin also contains high concentrations of melanin while light-colored hair contains very little of it. Both of these scenarios tend to reduce the amount of light reaching the hair follicle, making hair removal less efficient.

That’s why skin tone and hair color matter so much — and why the quiz asks about them first.

IPL vs. Laser vs. LED (What’s the Difference?)

Lasers, LEDs, and IPL light sources emit light at different wavelengths, and certain wavelengths are more effective for hair removal than others.

IPL Devices:

IPL devices emit a broad spectrum of wavelengths indiscriminately. Some wavelengths remove hair well. Others, however, get absorbed by skin melanin, creating a burn risk for darker skin tones. IPL devices generally emit less energy (i.e. they have a lower fluence) than laser and LED devices for safety reasons.

Laser and LED-Based Devices:

Lasers emit a single, precise wavelength. LEDs emit a narrow band of wavelengths. Both are engineered to target melanin in the hair follicle while minimizing absorption by the surrounding skin, making them safer and more effective across a wider range of scenarios.

Thick Hormonal Hair (Bikini, Beard, Neck, Back, Chest)

If you’re treating areas with coarse, hormonally-influenced hair (bikini, beard, neck, back, or chest), the quiz will recommend a high-fluence laser or LED device.

Hormonal areas have thicker, deeper follicles. Low-fluence IPL devices are less effective for these areas because they often don’t have enough energy at the correct wavelengths to reach and destroy the root. While some users report hair thinning and slower growth, many experience no significant hair reduction at all. Hormonal treatment areas are also prone to paradoxical hypertrichosis (hair growing back thicker) when treated with low-powered devices.

There are only a handful of at-home devices powerful enough for these areas. The quiz will point you to them — and away from cheaper IPLs.

When the Quiz Says “No”

Light-based hair removal isn’t for everyone. Reasons for disqualification:

• You have light blonde, red, grey, or white hair: These lack sufficient melanin for the light to target.

• You are trying to treat peach fuzz: Light-based devices are designed for coarse, pigmented hair. Treating peach fuzz can trigger paradoxical hypertrichosis and is not recommended.

Nearly a decade ago, I spent $200 on an at-home IPL device and returned it within a month. Not for lack of trying — I returned it because every flash above level 1 or 2 hurt enough that I had to stop and recover before continuing, and after weeks of trying, I had nothing to show for it.

I was a mechanical engineering student at the time, so “it just didn’t work” was not a satisfying answer. However, I didn’t have the framework yet to understand why it hurt that much and why someone with my skin tone and hair type was getting zero results while the device’s marketing showed nothing but smooth skin. That took years to figure out.

Why IPL Devices Work Well for Some People and Poorly for Others

All light-based hair removal, “Photoepilation”, works on the principle of Selective Photothermolysis: light energy is absorbed by target tissue (melanin in the hair follicle in this case) where it gets converted to heat and destroys the hair-producing cells. Most at-home hair removal devices are IPL which stands for Intense Pulsed Light. The conditions that make selective photothermolysis work reliably for IPL are specific: pale skin and medium-to-coarse, shallow-rooted dark hair. “Dark” here means black or near-black — medium and lighter brown hair contains less melanin than most people assume and responds more like finer hair. Move outside the optimal conditions in any direction and the results drop off quickly.

Is Finer Hair Harder to Treat?

Yes, and the reason comes down to melanin. The volume of the hair determines how much melanin is present, and so by nature, finer hairs have less melanin to absorb heat energy than medium or coarse hair. Consequently, the heat generated at the follicle may not reach the threshold needed to permanently disable the hair-producing cells.

This limitation is even more pronounced with low-fluence devices. Because Fluence is a measure of energy density (J/cm²), a low-fluence device simply cannot produce enough heat to compensate for the smaller target. It essentially boils down to this: the thinner the hair, the higher the fluence required to treat it.

That said, not all fine hair is the same, and the distinction matters before picking up any light-based device. Terminal Hair is what actually responds to photoepilation. While it is usually coarse on areas like the underarms, calves, and bikini region, it can also be quite fine for some in areas such as the forearms and thighs. Vellus Hair, on the other hand, is the soft peach fuzz that covers most of the body's surface. Areas with only peach fuzz should not be treated with a light-based device, as doing so carries the risk of Paradoxical Hypertrichosis.

While peach fuzz should be avoided, areas with finer terminal hairs can effectively be treated if a device provides a high enough fluence to compensate for the smaller target.

Why Is It Difficult to Get Results On Hormonal Hair?

Deep-rooted hair found in areas such as the bikini region and beard presents a separate challenge. Hair in these areas is androgen-driven, meaning it is hormonal, and the hair follicles sit significantly deeper under the skin. To permanently disable a deep-rooted follicle, the device’s energy has to travel further through skin to heat the root to the threshold needed for destruction.

IPL devices in particular struggle with this for two reasons that compound each other. The first comes back to fluence: most consumer IPL devices don't deliver enough energy per flash to maintain sufficient heat that far below the skin's surface. The second is wavelength, which is basically the “color” of light. Different wavelengths of light naturally penetrate to different depths in skin — some deposit most of their energy near the surface, while near-infrared wavelengths travel deeper. Because IPL devices emit a broad mix of wavelengths all at once, the energy that penetrates into the skin is diluted across multiple depths at the same time, resulting in no single depth receiving a concentrated dose of energy.

Laser and LED-based devices that emit only a narrow range of wavelengths significantly reduce the energy dilution problem; most of their energy penetrates a certain depth into the skin, which happens to be where hair follicles actually sit. This makes them inherently more effective at targeting hormonal hair than IPL devices.

Dark Skin Compounds Both Problems

Skin tone adds another layer of complexity regardless of hair type. Photoepilation works because devices emit energy that gets absorbed by melanin as heat — but melanin is present in the skin itself, not just in hair follicles, and the energy doesn’t discriminate between the two. For darker skin tones which inherently contain more melanin, a meaningful portion of the device’s energy gets absorbed by the skin before it ever reaches the follicle. The classic “rubber-band snap” sensation that at-home devices are known to have is actually the skin absorbing heat it was never supposed to receive.

This problem is made worse by IPL specifically. Its broad spectrum includes wavelengths that melanin absorbs more readily, so a portion of the energy is intercepted at the skin’s surface before it reaches the follicle. Laser and LED devices emit wavelengths that penetrate beyond that surface layer, so more energy arrives at the follicle rather than dispersing above it — a real difference in both comfort and results for darker skin tones.

What Has Improved in the Last Several Years

Today’s IPL devices have improved on one thing: pain. Active cooling systems have made the experience more tolerable than what I used almost a decade ago, and for the right candidate — fair skin, shallow follicle depth, dark hair — some of today’s IPL devices can deliver real results. However, cooling does not change the melanin problem for lighter brown or finer hair, the depth problem for hormonal hair, or the fluence trade-off for darker skin. The underlying physics hasn’t moved.

When I went back to researching at-home devices, I wasn’t looking for a more comfortable IPL. I was looking for something that didn’t have those limitations baked in.

What I Use Now

How does IPL hair removal work?

All light-based hair removal relies on a process called selective photothermolysis. The principle is relatively straightforward: the device emits light aimed at the target treatment area. Certain wavelengths of light are absorbed much more readily by melanin, the pigment in skin and hair. When melanin absorbs that light, it converts to heat. Hair generally has a higher concentration of melanin than the surrounding skin tissue, so it absorbs much more of that heat; enough heat traveling to the hair follicle root destroys the cells responsible for regrowth.

However, heat absorbed by the skin rather than the hair leads to discomfort and, at high enough energy levels, even burns. This is why contrast matters. Since pale skin has very little melanin and dark hair has the most, this combination produces the best results because the light energy goes preferentially into the hair rather than the skin. This means more follicle damage and less heat to surrounding tissue.

The skin-hair contrast is particularly important for IPL because certain wavelengths of light that IPL devices emit are especially prone to being absorbed by skin melanin. However, there are ways to improve the comfort and performance of IPL devices. Ulike partially addresses the wavelength problem with the SkinSensor and SHR modes, both of which improve comfort and safety when treating darker skin. Both technologies are featured in the Air 10, only the SkinSensor is featured in the X, and the Air 4 has neither.

How does SHR Mode increase comfort?

SHR mode, available in the Ulike Air 10, is the technique used in professional salon machines, where multiple low-intensity flashes build heat in the hair gradually, allowing the skin to cool across a full pulse. Hair retains heat better than skin, so a slower build-up allows skin to dissipate heat while the follicle accumulates enough heat to cause damage. This results in improved comfort and a reduced “rubber band snap” sensation compared to a single high-intensity flash.

The Ulike Air 10 uses two xenon arc lamps that fire up to two times each (up to 4 flashes) as a single combined pulse, producing up to 26J of energy across the four flashes. The 6.67 J/cm² fluence figure in Ulike’s specs represents the full four-flash burst, not each individual flash; each flash delivers only a fraction of that energy on its own. The fluence and frequency of flashes for the Air 10 is notably slightly below what salon machines typically use in SHR implementation. However, what reconciles this is the device frequency of use. The Air 10 is designed for three sessions per week over several weeks, whereas salon treatments are spaced weeks apart. More frequent lower-dose sessions accumulate comparable follicle damage over time, and the results in the last section of this article bear that out.

ViQure S-LD Results & What to Expect

Specifics About Me

• Skin Type: Fitzpatrick IV (Fitzpatrick V in some darker areas)

• Hair Color: Black

• Areas Treated: Upper and lower legs, underarms, bikini

Note: I have mild keratosis pilaris (often called “strawberry legs”), which is visible in the images. The darker spots around the follicle are not hairs but rather a buildup of keratin.

What Progress Looks Like

To understand my results, it’s helpful to first understand how light-based hair removal (photoepilation) actually works. Photoepilation produces results through a process called Selective Photothermolysis where a device emits an energy dose in the form of light, referred to as “fluence”. That light converts into heat when it encounters melanin in the hair, and this heat builds up at the hair follicle until the hair producing cells are destroyed.

Hair Shedding is the body’s response to photoepilation; it usually happens 1-3 weeks post-treatment and is the process in which skin expels the dead hair from the follicle. High fluence at-home devices like the S-LD can often produce prominent shedding, similar to professional-grade clinical lasers. However, shedding and hair regrowth can vary significantly based on your hair and skin profile.

I noticed several patterns throughout my own experience.

• The Fluence Connection: The S-LD has five power levels, each delivering a different energy output. What I noticed fairly quickly is that results are not linear — they are threshold dependent. Below a certain fluence level for a given treatment area, I would see some thinning but nothing dramatic. Once I crossed that threshold, results came on relatively quickly: shedding followed by patchiness within a few weeks. That threshold is dictated mostly by hair coarseness and root depth, which is why my results looked so different across treatment areas.

  • Coarse, Deep-Rooted Hair: While this was quite a sensitive treatment area for me, my bikini area responded right from the first treatment on level 1 and I noticed shedding within a week. This quick response is consistent with the physics in two ways:

    • LED and laser-based photoepilation devices emit light at near-infrared wavelengths that penetrate several millimeters into the skin, reaching deeper follicle roots such as those in the bikini area. This is a key advantage that the S-LD has over IPL devices which emit a broad spectrum of wavelengths, many of which do not penetrate as deeply.

    • Hair that is thick and dense has more melanin and is therefore better at absorbing and retaining heat energy from the device. This heat retention makes it easier for the device to destroy the hair follicles with thicker hair.

  • Finer Hair: By that same logic, finer hair necessitates more energy in the form of a higher device fluence to reach the same destructive heat. This is also consistent with my personal experience; I saw little-to-no reduction on levels 1 or 2 on my legs which have hair that is less coarse. However as soon as I bumped the device up to level 3, ~70% of the hair in the area began shedding within 1-2 weeks.

• Patchy Growth and “False” Regrowth: You may notice hair returning in uneven patches. Shorter hairs may appear about a week after the session. These are often detached from the root; they can be pulled out effortlessly with fingers or will fall out naturally over time.

• Thinning & Slower Growth: Some users don’t see dramatic “patchiness” right away. Instead, the hair returns much finer, lighter, and grows significantly slower than its original state.

Unexpected: Strawberry Legs Fading

I saw some mild fading of my keratosis pilaris, which is somewhat visible in the photos. While my strawberry legs have not totally cleared within 3 sessions, the spots appear lighter and my hair follicles look smaller. This was a surprising finding that was noticeable even after the first session, which suggests the treatment itself is at least part of the equation.

Procedure & Tips for Maximizing Results

1. Pre-Treatment

Shaving

Start by shaving the treatment area a few hours before treatment.

• The Why: Photoepilation works because light emitted by the device converts to heat as it hits the hair; this heat is what destroys the hair root. If too much hair is visible above the skin, the energy is absorbed at the surface, singeing the hair and potentially burning your skin. Shaving ensures that the heat is conducted down the hair shaft directly to the follicle’s hair-producing cells.

• Important: DO NOT wax, epilate, or pluck the hair in the treatment area. If there is no hair physically present in the follicle, the energy has nothing to heat up, and your session will produce no result.

Optional Hack: How Do You Cover Up Moles?

When treating larger areas, I use a white Kohl eyeliner to “white out” moles and draw a grid on my skin to easily track areas I’ve treated.

• The Why: Moles are dense concentrations of melanin, which makes them a burn risk if you pulse a photoepilation device directly over them. Covering a mole with flat white pigment creates a reflective surface that bounces the beam away from that concentrated melanin, allowing you to safely treat the hair immediately surrounding the mole.

• Important: Do not use “nude” or “shimmer” pencils. Nude pencils often contain iron oxides that absorb heat, and shimmery pencils can contain mica which can create light scattering. It must be flat, matte white Kohl eyeliner.

How Do You Apply the Gel?

Ensure the treatment area is clean, dry, and free from any topical oils, lotions, or creams. Apply a layer of clear, water-soluble ultrasound gel about 1/8th of an inch thick.

• The Why: Light scatters and partially reflects away when it goes from air to skin. Ultrasound gel bridges that air gap, eliminating the air and ensuring the light travels in a focused path into the follicle. You can read more about the physics here.

• Important: Ensure your ultrasound gel is clear and water-soluble.

  • Avoid Tinted Gels: Dyes can absorb light energy and heat up, increasing the risk of burns.

  • Choose a Water-Soluble Gel: Oil-based gels can trap heat, increasing burn risk, while silicone-based gels can leave behind residues that may eventually degrade the treatment window’s performance.

Eye Protection

You will need eye protection when operating this device. Always wear the safety glasses provided.

• The Why: The S-LD operates in the 780nm–850nm (NIR) light wavelength range. While light at this range does not appear bright to our eyes, it still poses a risk of eye injury with intense or prolonged exposure.

Patch Test

Every new treatment area needs a patch test prior to treatment because skin sensitivity can vary wildly between body parts. Apply gel, start at Level 1, and pulse. If you feel nothing, you can increase the level until you feel a warm “snap”. Wait 24–48 hours and look for signs of adverse reactions such as blistering.

2. Treatment Procedure

Treatment Level: Finding the Threshold

Perform your treatment at the level established during your patch test, but be prepared to adjust. If the pain is sharp, turn the level down immediately. Conversely, if the treatment doesn’t hurt at all, turn the device up by one level. Especially when treating sensitive areas, don’t be afraid to start at a lower level and work your way up.

• The Why: For permanent results, the device energy must be set high enough to cause irreversible thermal damage to the hair root. If the energy is too low, you may “stun” the hair and cause it to shed, but the follicle will remain healthy enough to regrow. However, be cautious not to overdo it. It’s better to work your way up to higher settings at your own pace than to power through a level that is too high and risk burns.

• The “Painless” Myth: Most companies market “painless” treatments, but this isn’t realistic. According to user reports as well as my own personal experience, using the S-LD is relatively painless most of the time, however it does feel like a rubber-band snap in particularly sensitive areas. That being said, I found it to be more tolerable than some other high fluence devices I’ve tried.

Scanning vs. Single-Shot Mode

The ViQure S-LD has two operating modes:

• Scanning Mode (Levels 1-3): In this mode, the device flashes automatically as you hold the button down and glide the treatment head. This is largely a convenience feature for treating large surface areas quickly.

• Single-Shot Mode (Levels 4 and 5): The two highest power settings are only available in Single-Shot (or “Stamping”) mode. You must manually trigger each flash by pressing the device button, and these levels deliver the highest fluence the device can produce. This concentrated energy is where stubborn hairs that have resisted lower settings tend to finally respond.

ViQure’s current guidance is to go over each area 4-6 times per session. This isn’t redundancy — multiple overlapping passes accumulates thermal dose at the hair follicles and ensures coverage. It is the reason why this device can be used infrequently while still delivering results.

My experience: I personally do 4 passes and get strong results. Something I find helps with coverage: switching orientation between passes. If your first pass goes vertically, do the next one horizontally. Gaps in one direction get caught by the perpendicular pass.

How Often Should You Use the ViQure S-LD?

The ViQure S-LD’s user manual recommends specific treatment intervals based on the biological hair cycles of different body areas.

• Underarms, Bikini Area, and Beard: 20-30 day intervals

• Arms, Legs, Back, Chest, Finger, Toes, Perioral area, Hairline: 40-60 day intervals

• Treatment course: 4-6 sessions

  • A note on realistic expectations: Manufacturer treatment timelines tend to reflect best-case scenarios based on ideal candidates with high skin-hair contrast, coarse hair, and consistent technique. In practice, many people will need a few more than 4-6 sessions to achieve significant permanent reduction, and that's completely normal. My own results took longer than the manual suggested in some areas. What matters is that the results are real and cumulative with consistent use.

• Pro Tip: Consistency is key. You might see hair growing back between sessions and feel the urge to treat more frequently. However, photoepilation only works when the hair is in its “growth phase”, where it is still physically connected to the root. By following the recommended intervals, you are allowing more “resting” hairs to rotate into that active growth phase, making treatments more efficient. Consistency and patience ensure you hit the most hair at the exact moment it’s vulnerable.

3. Post-Treatment

Post-Treatment Care

Immediately following treatment, you should:

• Rinse: Rinse the ultrasound gel off with soap and water. Many gels contain preservatives to keep them shelf-stable; while safe for a short procedure, leaving them on for many hours can trigger contact dermatitis.

• Soothe: Though it may not immediately feel like it, your skin has undergone a harsh procedure. Many people use aloe vera gel or fragrance-free lotion to soothe the skin post-treatment.

• Protect: If you are exposing the treated area, you must wear sunscreen. Post-treatment skin is highly photosensitive; sun exposure can cause dark spots or uneven skin tone, called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).

• Monitoring: Always consult a doctor if you experience any unexpected or prolonged side effects.

Optional Hack: Should You Exfoliate After Hair Removal?

While not strictly required, exfoliation can assist loose hairs in falling out faster. Additionally, as hair becomes thinner in the treatment area, some users experience more ingrown hairs after photoepilation. Exfoliation can help by freeing trapped hairs under the skin.

• Chemical Exfoliation: Using a mild chemical exfoliant between sessions helps the skin shed dead hairs.

• Mechanical Exfoliation: Another option is a gentle physical scrub or a dry brush to manually nudge the shedding hair along.

• The Safety Window: Exfoliation makes the skin significantly more sensitive. To avoid irritation:

  • Wait at least 3-5 days after a photoepilation treatment before exfoliating.

  • Stop all exfoliation at least 3-5 days before your next scheduled photoepilation session.

Do not over-exfoliate! Your skin is already in a sensitive state following photoepilation. Aggressive scrubbing or using high-percentage acids can compromise your skin barrier, leading to redness, raw spots, and increased risk of burns during your next session.

Final Verdict

Three treatments in, the S-LD has produced the kind of results I would have been skeptical of had I read them in someone else’s review: approximately 70% reduction across treated areas, with the strongest response in the bikini region and meaningful clearance on the legs once I found the right fluence threshold. For a consumer device, that is a meaningful outcome.

The case for this device is straightforward: it delivers fluence levels that most at-home devices do not, and fluence is the variable that determines whether a device produces permanent reduction at this speed. The treatment schedule and results are closer to what you would expect from a salon machine than from something you bought for home use, and it’s a fraction of the price of salon laser hair removal. The fundamentals of photoepilation

At its core, all light-based hair removal (Photoepilation) relies on a process called Selective Photothermolysis. This is the process of using energy in the form of light to selectively heat a target (the hair follicle) without damaging the surrounding tissue. It works because the pigment in our hair, melanin, absorbs certain types of light much faster than the surrounding skin. When that light hits the hair, it converts into heat. Heating the hair follicle root to a “kill” temperature destroys the hair-producing cells.

Dark skin is difficult to treat because it contains a high concentration of melanin. Skin melanin is concentrated at the surface of the skin and shields the energy from effectively passing through. In fact, research shows that over twice as much light is transmitted to the hair follicle in lighter skin (Fitzpatrick I-II) as dark skin (Fitzpatrick V-VI). This has two practical consequences:

1. It reduces the energy reaching the root, making photoepilation less efficient.

2. The heat absorbed by the skin causes discomfort and side effects including hyperpigmentation and burns.

To maximize both comfort and effectiveness for darker skin, the ViQure S-LD strikes a balance between several important factors.

Does light wavelength make a difference?

Yes — certain wavelengths bypass melanin in the skin’s surface, making them safer and more effective for dark skin.

Light travels in waves, and wavelength refers to the distance between the peaks of those waves. Humans perceive different wavelengths as different colors of light, but wavelengths extend beyond what the eye can see.

Light interacts with skin tissue differently based on wavelength. Shorter wavelengths are aggressively absorbed by melanin, which means in dark skin, they get stopped at the surface before ever reaching the hair root. Longer wavelengths, by contrast, pass through that surface layer far more efficiently. Beyond making photoepilation more effective for darker skin, devices operating at longer wavelengths carry a lower risk of Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (the dark patches that can linger after skin irritation) because less of the device’s energy is absorbed by the skin.

Why LED Matters Here: IPL devices use xenon arc lamps which inherently emit a broad-spectrum of wavelengths — usually 500-1200nm. The lower end of that range (500–700nm) is in the danger zone for dark skin: those shorter wavelengths are aggressively absorbed by surface melanin, increasing burn risk and hyperpigmentation. Lasers and LEDs, by contrast, emit only a narrow range of wavelengths, making them much better suited for treating dark skin.

The S-LD uses a high-power LED with a native emission of 780–850nm — squarely in the “therapeutic window” where wavelengths are long enough to bypass surface melanin but short enough to be effectively absorbed by the hair follicle. This delivers safer and more effective photoepilation for dark skin users.

Is higher fluence better?

Yes — but only if the device can deliver it safely without burning darker skin.

Fluence is the dose of energy a device emits, measured in J/cm². Most at-home devices operate at the lower end of effective fluence ranges. On lighter skin with ideal hair characteristics, this is sufficient, since little energy is lost to surface melanin before reaching the follicle. On darker skin, since surface melanin absorbs a meaningful portion of that energy, a device that is borderline effective on light skin may fall short of the effective threshold on darker skin. The catch: simply increasing fluence is not a safe solution on its own — that higher starting dose has to be delivered without burning the surface that absorbs it.

Consumer IPL devices already operate at low fluences, typically up to 6–7 J/cm² at peak. To manage burn risk on darker skin, most include skin tone sensors that automatically throttle energy output further when higher melanin is detected. This is a necessary safety measure, but it compounds the fluence problem: a device that is already borderline delivers even less energy to the skin. At worst, consistently sub-threshold fluence can trigger Paradoxical Hypertrichosis — stimulating hair growth rather than suppressing it.

A handful of at-home diode lasers do reach higher fluences, but they either lack skin cooling (making them painful to use) or cost significantly more.

How the S-LD closes the gap: At 25 J/cm², the S-LD does not throttle its output for darker skin. The safety margin comes from wavelength and cooling, not from reducing the energy dose. Additional features — which we will cover after the upcoming video — make it even more effective at delivering that fluence.

But don't just take the spec sheet's word for it.

Empirical proof: the “Hair Test” experiment

To see if the ViQure S-LD actually delivers the thermal energy required to denature hair protein, I ran an experiment on a swatch of my own hair taped to a notebook. I set the device to the highest setting (25 J/cm²) and fired a single pulse. The result was instantaneous. The hair wasn't just singed — it was totally carbonized.

The takeaway: Most at-home devices (especially budget IPLs) simply don't have the punch to cause this level of thermal damage to hair. If the S-LD can do this to a swatch of hair on paper, it has a fluence that is high enough to achieve permanent hair reduction.

What is pulse duration and why does it matter?

Pulse duration is the length of time a single pulse lasts, measured in milliseconds (ms). According to research, pulse duration is one of the key safety factors when treating dark skin.

The principle bridging dark skin safety and pulse duration relies on how quickly different tissues cool down. Hair holds onto heat better than skin, and this difference creates an opportunity: a slightly longer, gentler pulse can gradually heat the follicle to its “kill” temperature while the skin surface sheds heat along the way and never reaches a dangerous temperature.

For darker skin, this distinction is critical. A short, intense burst does not give the skin time to cool, resulting in a painful experience and even burns.

The Optimization: IPL devices fire a short, sharp pulse, with a pulse duration that is usually under 10ms, because their flashlamp technology releases energy in one quick burst — they simply cannot produce a long, gradual pulse. By contrast, the way that LEDs are controlled allows the S-LD to emit a 95ms pulse — long enough to exploit the thermal relaxation difference between hair and skin.

How skin cooling improves safety

Cooling creates a thermal buffer that protects the skin's surface while the follicle heats up. Without it, high fluence would burn dark skin.

Wavelength, fluence, and pulse duration all govern how light behaves. Cooling governs how the skin responds. It is the only factor focused entirely on protecting the skin’s surface rather than optimizing the light itself.

The S-LD’s contact surface — the plate with the treatment window that contacts your skin — has built-in active cooling. As the device delivers its pulse, the cooling system continuously pulls heat away from the skin’s surface. This creates a thermal buffer: the follicle still receives the energy it needs, but the skin above it stays significantly cooler than it would otherwise.

For darker skin, this buffer is essential. Without active cooling, the high fluence required for effectiveness would overheat surface melanin, causing discomfort or injury. With cooling, the same fluence becomes safe and tolerable.

Final Verdict

So — is the ViQure S-LD actually effective for dark skin?

Based on what I found in the clinical literature, the FDA filing, and my own use: yes, the S-LD is uniquely designed to be both comfortable and effective for Fitzpatrick IV and V users. The combination of a 780–850nm wavelength, 25 J/cm² fluence, long pulse duration, and active contact cooling addresses the main factors that make standard devices unsafe or ineffective for dark skin. No other at-home device in this price range currently hits all four.

However, it’s important to note that Fitzpatrick VI skin is excluded — the device specifications warn against it. And like all photoepilation, it works on pigmented hair only, which means grey or very light hair is out of scope regardless of skin tone.

This section is for curious minds who want to know what is actually happening under the hood. It is a brief summary of the research and knowledge that convinced me to buy the S-LD for myself.

LED-based hair removal is the “new kid on the block” of the at-home photoepilation world and has shown recent success in clinical evaluations, particularly for treating darker skin tones. The engineering challenge: packing enough intensity into a handheld device while maintaining safety.

Thermal Management: How 25 J/cm² is Possible

The Challenge: Historically, LEDs lacked the power density for permanent hair removal due to thermal droop, a physical law where light output plummets as soon as the LED heats up.

The Engineering Solution: Modern LEDs close the performance gap through internal pathways that move heat away from the light-producing center far more rapidly. Pairing these high-output chips with advanced thermal substrates, such as ceramic bases and metal-core boards, manufacturers are able to keep the electronics stable even under massive electrical loads.

Beam Control and the “Optical Bridge”

The Challenge: Unlike professional-grade lasers, both IPL and LEDs naturally emit incoherent light — photons leaving the light emitting surface are not in lockstep. A common misconception is that this incoherence itself prevents the light from penetrating deeply. In reality, once light enters skin, even a laser beam scatters and becomes incoherent. The real issue is divergence caused by the incoherence: when light rays travel at wide angles, they get absorbed by the skin or reflected away before reaching the follicle. Additionally, when light passes from air into skin, the change in medium can cause significant reflection.

The S-LD has two solutions to this:

1. The Solution (Reflector): The S-LD uses a reflective tube (visible through the lens) to gather scattered light and focus it into a narrow beam — about 15° divergence. This concentrates the light enough to significantly reduce reflection.

   

2. The Solution (Gel): The S-LD requires ultrasound gel during treatment. Because the gel's density closely matches human tissue (refractive index matching), it minimizes reflection at the surface, allowing photons to pass directly into the skin.

The Bottom Line: The S-LD's engineering — thermal management to hit 25 J/cm², a reflector to focus the beam, and ultrasound gel to couple light into skin — is why this LED device works on dark skin when others fail.

Standard IPL devices have a fundamental hurdle: they release a broad burst of energy into the skin all at once. Because melanin-rich skin absorbs that energy instantly as heat, the process is often painful and carries a high risk of burns or other unwanted side-effects. Engineers have attempted to bridge this gap through features like active contact cooling to protect the skin surface and filters to block the specific wavelengths, or “colors”, of light that cause surface damage. These features significantly reduce the harsh “rubber band snap” sensation, making the experience more tolerable. However, comfort is not a substitute for results. Even with these upgrades, IPL is often inefficient for deeper tones because the devices must throttle their total power to remain safe, frequently resulting in a treatment that is too weak to be effective.

Within the last few years, several IPL devices have entered the market claiming safety for Fitzpatrick IV and V skin. As of 2026, however, no at-home IPL devices are officially rated to safely treat Fitzpatrick VI skin. While IPL can be highly successful for “optimal” candidates (those with high contrast between dark hair and pale skin), the reality shifts as skin tones deepen. For those with a complexion beyond Fitzpatrick III, the physics of broad-spectrum light becomes a liability: these devices are statistically more likely to cause surface burns and less likely to deliver the permanent results they promise. To understand why this technology often fails us, we have to look at the science of selective photothermolysis.

The Science: Selective Photothermolysis

The primary “mechanism of action” of light-based permanent hair reduction is selective photothermolysis, a process designed to thermally damage the hair follicle while sparing the surrounding tissue. This works because the device emits specific wavelengths of light that are highly attracted to melanin, the natural pigment that gives hair and skin its color. When the light hits the target, the light energy instantly converts into heat. If enough heat reaches the base of the follicle, the hair-producing cells are destroyed.

Safety is maintained through the distinct thermal properties of skin and hair. Because the melanin particles in the skin are microscopic, they have a very short thermal relaxation time (the time it takes for tissue to lose 50% of its heat). This allows the skin to shed heat into the surrounding area almost instantly. In contrast, the hair follicle is much larger, meaning it holds onto that heat for a longer duration.

This process is supported by the skin’s high water content. Water has a high thermal capacity, meaning it takes a significant amount of energy to change its temperature, much like how a large lake stays cool even on a hot, sunny day. Together, these factors create a safety window: the light pulse is timed to be long and powerful enough to destroy the hair, but gentle enough that the skin can dissipate the heat before any thermal damage occurs.

The Catch: Because darker skin contains more melanin, the surface of the skin absorbs a significant portion of the light energy intended for the hair follicle. While pale skin only has to dissipate a small amount of heat, darker skin must manage a much higher thermal load. If the heat absorption exceeds the skin's ability to shed it, burns or other side-effects can occur. While specialized features can help bridge this gap, they often struggle to overcome the inherent limitations of IPL technology.

The Market Gap: Barriers to Effectiveness

Current IPL devices often struggle with dark skin for several reasons including:

1. Inefficient Wavelengths

Light colors are measured in wavelengths across the electromagnetic spectrum; 400nm is a violet color while 700nm is a deeper red. Humans generally cannot perceive light below 380nm or above 700nm, but those wavelengths can still hurt your eyes which is why many at-home photoepilation devices come with safety glasses.

In the context of hair removal, different wavelengths have different effects and finding the “sweet spot” is essential for both safety and results. Unlike a laser’s single wavelength, IPL emits a broad “rainbow” spectrum of many wavelengths (500nm–1200nm). The challenge for darker skin lies in the physics of this spectrum: shorter wavelengths (500nm–600nm) are aggressively absorbed by melanin, which can cause darker skin to overheat before the energy reaches the root. Furthermore, melanin absorption significantly drops off at wavelengths above 940nm. While specialized lasers like the 1064nm Nd:YAG laser can utilize higher wavelengths, they require a much higher fluence to be effective. This is a power standard that small, at-home IPL devices simply cannot safely or efficiently replicate. While higher-end IPL devices try to “clean up” the light by filtering out the most harmful wavelengths, this approach is essentially a compromise; simply removing the bad light doesn't create the “right” light. Research has shown that targeted wavelengths or specific, narrow ranges are inherently more efficient at destroying the follicle than a broad-spectrum beam that has been stripped down.

2. The Fluence Problem

To achieve permanent results, hair follicles must reach a specific thermal threshold. This requires high “fluence” (measured in J/cm²) which is the concentration of energy delivered to the skin. For the “ideal” user (dark hair on pale skin), the threshold for permanent follicular destruction is generally around the upper limit of at-home IPL capabilities, at roughly 5-6 J/cm². This is the bare minimum efficacy in virtually all published literature. For context, professional-grade machines often operate between 20-40 J/cm².

Because dark skin competes with the hair for energy absorption, many devices automatically throttle power on deeper tones to prevent injury. When this happens, the energy is frequently insufficient to kill the hair follicle. When IPL has any results at all at these lower levels, the energy is more likely to trigger the hair to shed or enter a dormant phase. This leads to temporary smoothness rather than permanent reduction. In some cases, sub-therapeutic heat levels can even activate dormant follicles, resulting in increased hair growth rather than reduction, a phenomenon known as paradoxical hypertrichosis.

3. Short Pulse Durations

For dark skin, the duration of the flash (the pulse duration) is the safety factor that consumers most overlook. Research has shown that longer pulses make treating darker skin significantly more comfortable and effective; they allow the epidermis time to dissipate heat while the follicle retains heat and gradually reaches the necessary “kill temperature”. If you’ve ever wondered why some devices hurt significantly more than others despite having similar fluence levels, pulse duration is often the culprit. However, there’s a catch.
As mentioned previously, selective photothermolysis relies on hair follicles heating up enough to destroy the hair root. This process works because hair has a much higher thermal relaxation time than the surrounding skin. The exception is finer hair. Because finer terminal hairs have a lower volume and smaller diameter than thicker hairs, they lose heat to the surrounding tissue much faster, resulting in a significantly shorter thermal relaxation time. This creates a brutal engineering trade-off for manufacturers:

1. Pulse is too Short: Pulses deliver energy faster than the skin can cool, causing significant pain and burn risks for darker skin.

2. Pulse is too Long: Pulse durations become ineffective at treating hair on the finer side across all demographics, as the heat dissipates from the thin follicle before it can be destroyed.

There are solutions to this; professional IPL devices, in contrast to at-home devices, are able to extend the effective pulse duration for darker skin while maintaining a steady fluence by “stuttering” the pulses (firing several micro-pulses in rapid succession to build heat in the hair slowly). However, the electronics required to do this are sophisticated, expensive, and bulky. Consequently, commercial at-home devices lack the hardware to mimic this multi-pulse delivery. This forces a compromise: manufacturers stick to shorter, aggressive pulses that protect device performance ratings, but leave them needing to throttle power to safely treat melanin-rich skin.

4. The Physics of Divergent Light

IPL differs from professional-grade lasers due to the properties of divergent light. Lasers produce coherent light, meaning the waves are synchronized to travel in a perfectly straight, narrow column which reduces energy loss at the skin’s surface. In contrast, the incoherent light produced by IPL results in a beam that naturally diverges, or spreads out, in a wide and chaotic pattern.

Because these light waves are out of sync and travel in multiple directions, they often reflect or refract the moment they hit the skin. While this “scattered” light can still achieve permanent hair reduction in fair skin, it presents a challenge for those with darker skin. Not only does the light struggle to reach the follicle due to this surface scattering, but the melanin in the surrounding epidermis simultaneously absorbs what remains. This combination of optical scattering and competitive absorption makes IPL significantly less efficient and far more prone to adverse side effects for melanin-rich skin.

Conclusion: Bridging the Gap

Ultimately, the challenge for those with darker skin is a lack of options that consider our biology. The “safety vs. efficacy” trade-off in the current IPL market forces darker-skinned consumers to choose between a device that is safe but essentially a “glorified flashlight,” or a device that is powerful but poses a genuine risk of hyperpigmentation and burns.

True progress for our demographic lies in moving away from the current approach of broad-spectrum IPL and toward technologies that prioritize longer pulse durations and targeted wavelengths. By understanding the physics of our skin, we can stop settling for temporary hair shedding and start demanding technology that provides the permanent results it actually promises. We don’t need “safer” versions of the wrong tools; we need tools built for our melanin from the ground up.
